Discover the Ait Bougumez Valley

The Ait Bougumez Valley, also known to its visitors as the “Valley of the Happy,” is a wide, fertile valley generously irrigated by the springs of the central High Atlas. Stretching across a lush green landscape at the foot of villages perched along the rocky mountain slopes, the valley lies at an altitude of 1,800 meters and therefore offers pleasant summer temperatures.

For a long time, the valley remained remote in the High Atlas and was particularly isolated during the winter months. This isolation has preserved the authenticity and natural beauty of the landscapes of the Ait Bougumez Valley. Wadis, green gardens, abundant pastures, tea with host families, and accommodation in comfortable cottages – these are the defining features of this peaceful and sustainable discovery hike in this part of Morocco. This journey allows you to discover a new facet of the daily and ancestral life of the mountain Berbers, their villages and valleys each day, and to get to know the people of the central High Atlas and their culture with genuine local appreciation.

Easy and peaceful walks from village to village, where every step offers an opportunity for warm encounters with the inhabitants of the valley.

What you need to know (FAQ's)

What level of physical fitness is required?

This hiking and discovery journey is suitable for anyone with a normal level of health, fitness, and stamina. The hikes last between 4 and 6 hours per day, with a maximum elevation gain and descent of 500 meters.

At any time, you may choose to skip a hike and spend the day relaxing at the comfortable guesthouse or in the village instead.

How is my luggage handled during the hiking journey?

Your belongings are divided between a small daypack that you carry during the hikes and a travel bag that is transported by the local logistics team. Please bring a soft duffel bag (no hard suitcase), as it is easier to load onto donkeys and mules.

What equipment and clothing should I bring for the trip?

Please bring a flashlight or headlamp, personal medication, and sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen). Pack a waterproof and windproof jacket with hood, warm layers, practical hiking clothing, and ankle-high trekking shoes with good grip. You will need a daypack of around 25 liters and a lightweight sleeping bag liner for the desert camp. For the trekking days, a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of 0°C is required (available for rental at €40).

What additional equipment is recommended?

We recommend bringing telescopic trekking poles, functional underwear, swimwear, and comfortable shoes (such as sneakers). You may also wish to pack a camera or binoculars, a pocketknife, snacks (e.g., energy bars), drink powder, and a small toiletry kit with biodegradable soap, towel, tissues, and toilet paper.

What level of fitness and experience is required?

This trip includes moderate hikes that are manageable with average fitness and good overall health. Sure-footedness is essential, and previous mountain hiking experience is helpful. Walking times can be up to 6 hours per day, with ascents and descents of up to 400 meters.

The winding mountain trails of Morocco call for a slow, almost meditative pace. Walking steadily helps prevent fatigue and allows you to fully appreciate the surrounding nature. Regular breaks are recommended — eat lightly and drink plenty of water.
