High Atlas Crossing – From the Valley of the Happy to the Rose Valley
The Aït Bougmez Valley, often called the “Valley of the Happy,” lies at 1,800 meters in the central High Atlas and marks the starting point of this unforgettable trekking journey. From here, the route crosses the rugged mountains of the High Atlas towards the south, leading through dramatic landscapes of high plateaus, deep gorges, and remote Berber villages before reaching the famous Rose Valley.
Along the way, you hike through wild mountain scenery, fertile oasis valleys, and traditional settlements built from ochre-colored earth. Together with a local support team and pack mules, you travel through one of Morocco’s most spectacular regions and experience the culture of the Berber and nomadic families of the Atlas up close. Nights under the stars in mountain camps and the ascent of Jebel M’Goun (4,068 m) make this journey a true adventure.

What you need to know (FAQ's)
What level of physical fitness is required?
This trekking journey is suitable for travelers with good physical fitness and endurance. Daily hikes last up to 6 hours, with elevation gains and descents of up to 1,000 meters. On the summit day, hiking time can reach up to 10 hours, with about 700 m ascent and 1,500 m descent. The ascent of Jebel M’Goun (4,068 m) is optional and an alternative route is available. While it requires stamina and adjustment to altitude, it does not involve technical climbing.
How is my luggage handled during the hiking journey?
Your belongings are divided between a small daypack that you carry during the hikes and a travel bag that is transported by the local logistics team. During the trek, your main luggage is transported by mules, so you only carry a daypack with essentials such as water, warm layers, rain protection, and personal items. Your main luggage will be available again each evening at camp. Please bring a soft duffel bag (no hard suitcase), as it is easier to load onto donkeys and mules.
What equipment and clothing should I bring for the trip?
Please bring a flashlight or headlamp, personal medication (for example for headaches, colds, or digestive issues), and sun protection such as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Pack a waterproof and windproof jacket with a hood, warm layers such as a sweater or hat, and practical hiking clothing including T-shirts, trekking pants, and hiking socks. Ankle-high trekking shoes with good grip are essential.
You will also need a daypack of around 25 liters and a sleeping bag liner for overnight stays in camps. For the trekking days, a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of 0°C is required (available for rental for €40).
What additional equipment is recommended?
We recommend bringing telescopic trekking poles, functional underwear, swimwear, and comfortable shoes (such as sneakers). You may also wish to pack a camera or binoculars, a pocketknife, snacks such as energy bars, drink powder, and a small toiletry kit with biodegradable soap, a towel, tissues, and toilet paper.
What are requirements for enjoyable trekking?
The hikes on this trip are of moderate difficulty and are suitable for travelers with good physical condition and overall health. Sure-footedness is required, and previous mountain hiking experience is helpful. Daily walking times are usually up to 6 hours, with ascents of up to 1,000 m and descents of up to 1,500 m on some days (see detailed itinerary). The winding trails of Morocco’s mountains are best walked at a steady, relaxed pace. This allows you to conserve energy and fully enjoy the surrounding landscapes. Regular breaks are recommended — eat lightly and drink plenty of water.
